Everything you need to know about the NIE

What it is, what you need it for, how to apply and what it costs.

The NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is a unique number that the Spanish National Police assigns to any foreign national with economic, professional or social interests in Spain, whether or not they are from the EU. It is a letter (X, Y or Z), seven digits and a check letter (e.g. Y-3688609-S). It is issued on a white sheet of paper, the assignment certificate, and the number never expires: it stays the same for life. It is your tax and administrative identifier in Spain, not a residence or work permit.

From the moment you send the form you have your own page showing the status of your application: whether we're reviewing your case, looking for your appointment, waiting for payment or preparing your documents. We also email you at every change, so you never have to ask.

If you're from the EU, the EEA or Switzerland and you'll live in Spain for more than three months, you need the green NIE: the EU registration certificate (EX-18), which already carries your NIE. If you only need the number to buy, inherit or sign something without moving, it's the white NIE (EX-15). The TIE is the photo card for non-EU residents, and we don't handle it. You don't need to know which one is yours: the form asks whether you're staying and works it out.

For almost everything you'll do in Spain: working as an employee or self-employed, opening a bank account, buying or selling a home, getting a mortgage, starting a business, setting up electricity or water, buying a car or paying taxes.

The green one is for EU, EEA and Swiss citizens staying in Spain for more than three months: employees, self-employed people, students, retirees and family members. You apply within three months of arriving, and you don't need the white one first. The white one is for people who need the number without living here: to buy a home, inherit, invest or work occasionally. We handle both from start to finish, and with both you can track your application on your own page.

It depends mostly on the office in your province, which is why we get going as soon as you send the form. We won't promise timescales that aren't up to us, but you won't lose a day: we prepare everything in the meantime and you can see where things stand on your own page. We take care of the hard part; you only go to the office one day.

Once you have an appointment. You fill in the form without paying anything; we check your details and go for the appointment, and as soon as we have it we confirm it by email with a link to pay the €150. Nothing is charged before that: if the appointment takes a while to come up, we keep looking until a slot opens.
